MIVA MERCHANT HOSTING |

With whom to host a Miva Merchant storefront is one of the biggest decisions one can make when opening an online store. Fortunately there is no short supply of Miva Merchant hosts, many with the newer and faster compiled versions (v4.14+). But with the massive amount of hosting choices, it can make one's head spin. So where should one start, and what should one look for in a hosting plan? Miva Hosting Resources:
Miva Merchant Host Pricing:For most, pricing will likely be the determining factor. Keep in mind the old axiom, "you get what you pay for", will particularly hold true when it comes to E-commerce hosting plans. A decent host may be found with a starting plan of under $40/month. Probably even less if you own a Miva Merchant license outright, instead of having to lease one from a host. Miva Upgradeability:All too often hosting companies look upon Miva Merchant not as an advanced E-commerce system, but as a marketing tool merely used for bundling it into a higher priced hosting plan. There will come a time when a store owner will find him or herself making the decision to upgrade or to customize a store as the business evolves. This makes good sense in that the Internet and marketing change at a very fast pace. You need to make sure that whichever host you choose to trust with your business, allows you to upgrade your store to the most recent version and to customize it in the way you deem necessary. From the outset you need to insist that Miva Merchant be installed with the most up to date version, this includes the Miva Empressa engine. Some hosts may not even allow the installation of modules such as the OpenUI. If this is the case, I recommend looking elsewhere. Support:Technical support should be the most important factor when considering a web host. Web hosting is a services industry, and the quality of service can make or break an E-commerce business with ease.
These are some of the important questions you need to consider before any money is commited. Remember, a company may be very helpful just to get your business, but may quickly become forgetful once they have it. Do your homework, ask around and visit forums before making a final decision. A good place to start is the Miva Merchant Users group. It's probably the best support one can find concerning Miva related issues, and is frequented by active members in the Miva community specializing in Miva hosting. Some recommended Miva hosting providers may also be found here. Shared Hosting:Most likely a new store will be run on a shared server unless a dedicated hosting plan is purchased. This means for a cheaper price, you will share the server resources along with probably many other web sites and stores, possibly numbering in the hundreds. A good host will understand the limitations of the servers and only assign the number of accounts that the server may easily handle. If not, then the site may run slow, have timeouts, etc. All easily contributing to lost sales. Everything may be running fine until the next holiday rush, and then tax the server to a crawl.
